“Save manuals” has gone beyond simple popular status and has evolved into an anthem for many people looking to preserve the physical pleasure that comes from changing the gears oneself. Electric automobiles and general lack of interest have caused a drastic decrease in the number of vehicles equipped with manual-type transmissions within the U.S., but some automakers are determined to keep the tradition alive. Mini is taking action with its new manual transmission driving class.
Mini eliminated the manual from its catalog because of supply chain issues however, it has announced that it will bring it back in 2023. Mini will be using BMW’s parent BMW’s Performance Center in Thermal, California to teach the classes and states that the school is open to anyone “looking for a chance to learn how to drive manual in a stimulating and safe environment.”
BMW offers numerous classes and events on the tracks located at California and Spartanburg, South Carolina as well as the teen driver’s school, high-performance driving lessons, and an M driving class , which includes a seat with the M4 GTS. Mini-courses were added in 2016 and the new program is focused on the fundamentals of operating an automatic transmission. The course teaches about determining your friction points, smooth start and stoppages, acceleration and the controls for the vehicle. Drivers are tested after the program to evaluate their progress and skills.
