Jay Leno Recalls Horrific Accident: “My Face Caught On Fire”
Jay Leno was admitted to hospital following a severe burn when he was working on one of his antique automobiles in Los Angeles last month.
A month after a horrifying incident that took place in his garage and caused serious burn marks, American television presenter Jay Leno has spoken out about what actually transpired that day. The comedian admitted on the radio that he suffered injuries as he worked at one of his classic automobiles, which was the 1907 White Steam Car, according to People. Me Leno was injured after the car, which was 115 years old, caught fire in its Los Angeles garage. He was saved by a close friend before being admitted to a hospital. The host of the “Tonight Show” was undergoing multiple surgeries, one of which was called a “grafting process” which was then he received his discharge in the latter part of November.
“It was a 1907 White Steam Car. Its fuel lines were blocked which meant that I was sitting underneath it. It was a hum and I told him to blow an air stream through it and he did.” stated Mr. Leno, talking about the incident on November 12.
He was able to recall how the line for fuel had made some sort of noise. “And then, boom, I was sucked up with a full face of gas. The pilot light went off and my face was caught in the flames.”
“It was as if my skin was burning. It could be one of the greatest sunburns that you’ve ever experienced, which is an accurate description,” said Mr. Leno in an interview scheduled for airing at noon on Today.
The comedian mentioned that he was able to close his eyes and breathe deeply in an effort to lift himself from under the car. “I’m not one to be scared however, I was aware that the moment I breathed, I would be able to burn my lungs. I was in the car just a few seconds before Dave took me out. Anything longer than that might have lost my sight,” he added.
Fortunately, Leno said his friend Dave Killackey had acted quickly.
Mr. Leno also hosted, The Tonight Show between 1992 and 2009 until he was replaced in 2009 by Conan O’Brien, a deal which was in the making for five years. The comedian’s time slot was changed to 10 pm, which was later replaced by the show ‘The Jay Leno Show’. Both shows suffered from poor ratings, leading to the notorious decision by NBC to reinstate the late Mr. Leno as the ‘Tonight Show host. He kept on until 2014.
