India Could Surpass China As The Most Populous Country Earlier Than UN Projections For 2027: Report

Concept or composition of World Population day

India is predicted to add 273 million to the country’s population between now and 2050 the UN report predicted in 2019, predicting that India will surpass China to become the largest nation in 2027. India will continue to be the world’s largest country by the close of the century, the report stated.

Chinese Demographers predict that India is likely to become the most populous nation in the world ahead of that United Nations’ projection of 2027, eclipsing China which has seen a steady decline in birth rates has been observed over the past few years.

In the year 2019 India was estimated to have a total population of 1.37 billion, and China 1.43 billion according to UN numbers.

The once-in-a-decade count that was released by China on Tuesday showed that China’s population increased at the slowest rate to increase to 1.41178 billion, retaining its position as the world’s biggest country despite projections by the government that it could fall in the coming years.

The decline in population could result in a shortage of labour and the reduction in consumption and impact the second-largest economy’s future economic future outlook.

China’s state-owned Global Times daily on Wednesday published a report quoting Chinese demographers saying that India’s population could surpass China’s before 2027.

With Chinese fertility rates for birth predicted to decrease over the coming years, Demographers have predicted they would predict that India with its more fertile population will surpass China in the rankings of the top-ranked nation by 2023 or 2024. This is earlier than the previous UN prediction for the year 2019, according to the daily’s report.

Lu Jiehua, professor of sociology at Peking University, said China’s population could reach its peak in 2027 before it begins to fall. Some experts believe that the peak could occur in 2022.

China is also at danger of falling into trap of low fertility since it registered the birth of 12 million babies in 2020. That’s an increase for the fourth time in a row.

The fertility rate for all Chinese women who are pregnant was 1.3 which is a low rate.

The world’s percentage of fertility reached 2.5 in the year 2019, as per the United Nations’ World Fertility and Family Planning, 2020 report. Liang Jianzhong, an economics professor at Peking University, told the Global Times that China’s fertility rate will continue to fall over the next few years and could be the world’s lowest.

“According to the data available that are available, over the next decade, the amount of women aged between 22 and 35 that is, the time when children are born that will fall by 30% compared to the data currently available” He said.

“Without mediation from the public authority China’s infant populace will prone to dip under 10 million over the course of the following couple of years and its richness rate is probably going to not exactly that of Japan and possibly the lowest of all,” Liang predicted.

In light of the current growing population, China stopped the one-child policy in 2016 and permitted two children. However, it had a very small effect on the decline in number of people as only a handful were willing to adopt an additional child.

China expects to remove any restrictions regarding the number of children couples can have.
