After a box office failure, ‘Black Adam” arrives on HBO Max
“Black Adam” now streams on HBO Max. This gives more people a chance to see the DC antihero movie starring Dwayne Johnson.
“Black Adam” was released in theaters in October 21st, It revolves around Teth Adam (Johnson), an ancient Kahndaq superhuman who uses his godly powers for vengeance. He was quickly imprisoned. Present-day archeologists have freed Adam after nearly 5,000 years to help Kahndaq escape the criminal syndicate Intergang. He is however provoked by the Justice Society: Hawkman (Aldis Holge), Hawkman (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher, Noah Centineo), and Cyclone.
Although the spin-off “Shazam!” was generally welcomed by some, the film disheartened numerous pundits and film fans. NPR’s Glen Weldon said Johnson’s performance was “under-seasoned and “ponderous.” IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called “Black Adam” a “lifeless spectacle” while calling the characters “a cheap copy of one from Gotham [Marvel Cinematic Universe]”.
Black Adam also did poorly at the box office, with $400 million earned worldwide against a $ 195 million budget. This doesn’t account for marketing costs and distribution costs. Johnson refuted claims that Black Adam would lose between $50 and $100 million. Johnson tweeted that “Black Adam” would make between $52 million to $72 million.
The streaming of “Black Adam” on HBO Max is a good thing. It’s available to millions of subscribers. The movie’s streaming debut is happening during the holiday season, which could increase its chances of success.
“Morbius,” another superhero movie featuring an antihero, was a box-office disaster. It earned $163 million globally and $74 million in the U.S., with a budget of $75 million. The movie made a profit but Sony has a multiyear Netflix deal so it was still a success. When “Morbius,” its September debut on Netflix, made it into the top 10 lists.
