Bulletproof coffee, a freshly made frothy and frothy that is topped with butter, is quickly getting popular in the world of wellness. The morning beverage has gained popularity with a wide range of Indian stars such as Bhumi Pednekar, Sidharth Malhotra, Rakulpreet, and Jacqueline Fernandez who are often snapped in front of this cup of coffee every day. The devotees of bulletproof coffee, also known as bullet coffee say it reduces cravings for food, assists in weight loss, stimulates your body, and boosts your alertness. Yet there is a rift among experts on the claims of health benefits associated with bulletproof coffee.
“Bulletproof coffee, also known as butter coffee is a favorite among celebs. Many celebs start their day by drinking a beverage. It will keep you full for a long time since it’s rich in fat. Additionally, the high-fat content helps to maintain stomach issues over plain coffee that is drunk on an empty stomach. It’s a fat-rich and calories drink that gives an energy boost to your day. It will keep you full for longer and can be used as a substitute for breakfast. People who are on the keto diet or athletes can take this to replace breakfast. A fad diet?
While many people are enjoying the latest trend in weight loss but it could backfire due to the low micronutrients in their diet and the excessive fat intake that can harm those suffering from chronic illnesses or cholesterol issues.
“If you’re planning to be a part of the trend you should do some study first. Since bulletproof coffee is low in micronutrients, if you normally eat 3 meals, and then substitute one with bulletproof, the number of micronutrients you consume could decrease by about a third. A breakfast that’s not very heavy on Glycaemic Index (GI) or that is totally ultra-processed is more nutritious,” Nutritionist Rancho Rastogi in a recent Instagram post.
“Each diet, regardless of the time of day it is, should be balanced, containing adequate amounts of protein, and carbohydrates, along with fats, micronutrients, and fiber. The latest trend of drinking “butter coffee” instead of breakfast is not even near enough to meet the guidelines of a healthy, balanced diet. Butter coffee is coffee brewed using butter, and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil that is a concentrated source of high amounts of fat, and is deficient in many other vital nutrients. This is the only way to keep you feeling energetic throughout the day and reduce your appetite, but also significantly decrease the total amount of nutrients your body needs to maintain its healthy functioning,” says Sameena Reddy, Senior Dietitian and Nutritionist WeCARE Hospitals, Hi-Tec City, Hyderabad.
How can bullet coffee help boost the energy level?
“Caffeine may reduce the feeling of hunger and may cause false feelings of satisfaction. It fills you up because it’s a high-calorie ingredient. Based on the fat’s quality, there are advantages too. Combining these two effects you’re not full and feel the caffeine-induced boost of energy. This is a great energy boost, and you feel good immediately,” Says Reddy.
Research suggests that keto or low-carb diets which usually include bulletproof coffee could cause higher cholesterol levels. The negative effects are most severe at first but should not be taken into consideration if cholesterol is an existing problem.
The negative side effects of bulletproof coffee!
“It’s very low on nutrition. Bulletproof coffee may contain some micronutrients but it’s not a lot. The most nutritious fat to make bulletproof espresso is butter that’s grass-fed, that can provide some nutrients however it’s not much compared to the nutritional value that a decent breakfast could offer. It could lead to elevated cholesterol levels at first. The bulletproof variety of coffee can be extremely saturated with fats, to the point where it could be used to replace a meal. In addition, the excessive intake of fats that comes from the daily consumption of coffee could result in high cholesterol levels.
Can bullet coffee cause an increase in levels of cholesterol?
Research has shown that keto and low-carb diets which usually include bulletproof coffee may cause higher cholesterol levels. The negative effects are most severe at first and should be prevented if you have high cholesterol as already a problem,” adds Rastogi.
Yes, agree with Rastogi who claims that butter coffee is rich in fat content, with oil and butter being the primary ingredients. Moreover, an individual’s intake of saturated fats can increase, leading to weight gain, increased cholesterol levels, and a higher risk of heart disease and other ailments when consumed on a regular basis.
“Our advice, particularly for those in the Indian people, where the intake of ghee, oil, and butter is already at higher levels it is to adhere to a balanced and healthy diet instead of going after these internet-popular unhealthy diet alternatives, which have no scientific backing or results,” says Rastogi.
Rastogi warns you that if don’t use bulletproof coffee for your breakfast or meal replacement, the calories (due to fats) can result in more calorific consumption and weight increase.
