Amazon today announced that it had signed a deal with Games Workshop (GAW) for IP rights to “Warhammer 40,000”, a popular miniature wargame. According to Amazon, this is the first such deal.
“Warhammer 40,000” is set in the future where people are undermined by advanced creatures. GAW has launched nearly 40 years ago. The game continues to expand and GAW now has miniature figures, tabletop, and video games, animations, books, and other media.
Amazon will be able to distribute films and TV series based on the IP under this agreement. This is a significant move by Amazon since the “Warhammer 40,000” universe is huge in scale and has a large worldwide fanbase.
Henry Cavill, the actor of “Man of Steel” as well as “The Witcher”, will star in and executive produces “Warhammer 40,000”. It’s likely that Cavill will be a part of the new “Warhammer 40,000”, content, which is comforting for many as he’s a “Warhammer” nerd.
Cavill posted an Instagram message, “For thirty years, I dreamed of seeing a Warhammer Universe in live action.” After 22 years in the industry, I feel confident that I have the skills and experience necessary to bring a Warhammer Cinematic Universe to life. Having an Amazon home will allow us to live up to the vast scope of Warhammer. I pledge to all Warhammer lovers out there that I will respect the IP we love. I will do my best to bring you something amazing that has yet to be seen.”
Vertigo Entertainment, together with Amazon Studios, GAW’s global head of marketing and media, Andy Smillie, and Max Bottrill, will executive produce alongside Cavill.
