Mickey: The Story of a Mouse

Mickey Mouse

The story is well-known to most people. Walt Disney’s lead animator, created Mickey to replace  Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit. This character was created by Disney, but is owned by Universal. Mickey was created in 1928 by Disney and Iwerks. He made his public debut in Steamboat Willie in 1928. Mickey Mouse was one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars.

Many people don’t realize that Mickey’s story influenced the development of the Walt Disney Brand. Mickey: The Story of a Mouse is a Disney+ documentary that reveals every step, from an image in your head to one of entertainment’s true icons.

Mickey Mouse cartoons were different from other cartoons because he wasn’t a typical hero or had many jokes. His faults are humor and joy. He made mistakes and got angry but the cartoon always ended with him reaching his goals. He was an example of perseverance even in the face imperfection, and that is why Mickey Mouse was such a great inspiration for animation at that time.

The story of how three circles became a legendary character goes beyond what you see on the screen. Walt Disney originally recorded his voice. He made him vulnerable and nervous. His simple design allowed the movement to be in the front row of the early shorts.

The movie also explores his appearances outside of the shorts. He was a part in 1940s propaganda videos, as well as propaganda for the war effort. Mickey also played a role in the counterculture movement of the 60s and 1970s.

The documentary does not shy away from showing the flaws in Mickey, which, frankly, don’t age well. The documentary shows Mickey in blackface. It features him as a sexually aggressive man and culturally insensitive. This is not a good look at one of the most family-friendly entertainers in history.

They also discuss one aspect of Walt Disney Corporation that is often controversial: their litigation-based protection of the Mickey Mouse Image. Although the company did not always manage those actions well, they once forced a daycare to take out images of Mickey and Friends. On the other hand, they stopped a company drawing their own Mickey and Minnie characters to sell their car. Their philosophy is enriched by the doc, who cites Disney’s loss to Oswald as one reason they have a tight grip on Disney intellectual property.

In many ways, Mickey Mouse became a secondary character in a cast of characters that included a company where he was the face. Early parents complained about Mickey Mouse’s taboos, which were quite mild by today’s standards. He was less of a leader man and more of an icon and the Walmart greeter at their entrances. The film shows his journey through creating new shorts that allow him to become the star of his own stories.

If you don’t know these things, or if you have never seen the old cartoons other than a few clips of them, then what is Mickey Mouse? He is a symbol to me. He is a symbol for innocence, childhood, and magic in a very real sense. As my daughter took in the sights, I stood beside her at the foothill of Main Street. It is refreshing of the spirit.

You are all eligible to see Mickey Mouse, regardless of who you vote for and who you pray too. The magic of Mickey Mouse is everywhere. It’s evident in every movie, park and cruise ship. They have hidden Mickeys that imbibe them with their own energy, making them one of the most successful entertainment businesses in history. And it all began with a mouse.
